Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 lets you play as the infamous Chaos Marines, allowing for some fun moments through its extensive single player campaign, and other game modes.
It’s not as straightforward as jumping into a game with a Chaos Marine though, and players will have to ensure that certain prerequisites are met. Details on the same can be found listed below – along with instructions on how to further customize your Chaos Marine in the game.
How to unlock and play as a Chaos Marine in Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2
Chaos Marines can only be accessed via the ‘Eternal War’ game mode. To play as a Chaos Marine, you have to simply get lucky – given that the game sorts its players into Loyalists and Heretics as soon as the match begins, at random.
Players as such have no control over the selection at all. Thankfully, the differences between the Loyalists and Heretics is purely cosmetic in nature, with both parties having access to the same game equipment and perks.

The Chaos Marines are playable in the following game modes of the Eternal War:
- Alpha Legion
- Black Legion
- Death Guard
- Night Lords
- World Eaters
- Iron Warriors
How to customize your Chaos Marine in Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2
- You must be in a Chaos Chapter in order to be able to customize a Chaos Marine.
- Simply head to a Chaos Chapter in order to gain access to a Heretic.
- Select the ‘Edit Armor’ option after you select a Class for the chapter.
- Find the ‘Heretic Astartes’ option on the right hand side of the HUD.
- You will automatically switch to a Chaos Marine and be immediately presented with the option to alter colors.
- Set your colors, and proceed to battle.
Unfortunately, the customization for Chaos Marines is rather restrictive – only allowing for the swapping of colors, not classes. Each Chaos Chapter forces players to use a predetermined class, which cannot be swapped in any way later during a fight.
