Dragon Age Veilguard is set to launch soon, and is the fourth major entry in the beloved RPG series. Veilguard brings in a lot of the old, with a sprinkle of new quality of life improvements which should make it the most accessible entry yet.
Given the long campaign of the RPG, players may be curious as to whether they need to play through prior entries in the Dragon Age franchise before starting Veilguard.
While the answer is mostly a no, there are some benefits of playing through the other games, which will be discussed below.
Do you need to play the previous Dragon Age games before starting Dragon Age The Veilguard?

The answer remains a resounding no. Dragon Age The Veilguard was designed to draw in new players to the franchise, and as such does not require any previous knowledge of the series – in any form.
Veilguard is its own standalone game, complete with a new cast of characters and locale.
All of this is done while ensuring that the game does not feel disrespectful or detached from the prior Dragon Age games. The game thus maintains a direct (but subtle) link to entries such as Origins and Inquisition.
Veilguard has many references and direct links to prior Dragon Age games
While the developers have explicitly mentioned that Veilguard does not require you to have played through the prior Dragon Age games, having first hand experience of these games should help augment your experience greatly.
In particular, there are certain pivotal moments in the game’s campaign that directly reference events within Origins and Inquisition.
Without jumping into spoiler territory, there are also several sections that represent major player choices within the prior entries – and should be a treat for fans of the series.
Players will have the option of selecting some of these choices individually when creating a character.
Having played through these games previously should also aid your understanding of the game world better.
