While you can recruit 7 companions in Dragon Age The Veilguard, you can only have a maximum of two at a time in your active party. Unfortunately, you will not be able to swap between your party members on the fly and you will need to pick from your followers carefully before you embark on a quest.
You can also change companions by interacting with the fast-travel beacons that are spread throughout the region allowing you to mix and match your playstyle before a difficult encounter. Here are all they ways of changing companions in the RPG.
Dragon Age The Veilguard Companion change/swap guide
Here are the two ways of swapping companions in Dragon Age The Veilguard:
1) When starting a new quest

You will be able to pick your party members as soon as you head out of the Lighthouse. When you select a destination to go to you will come across the “Change Party” option over the “Start Quest” button.
You can interact with the button and swap out your current companions for a different pair. However, do keep in mind that when starting with the narrative and the main quests in Dragon Age The Veilguard you will not have access to the party swap feature in the initial hours.
You will be allowed to choose your companions once you begin “Into the Crossroads”.
2) Interacting with Beacons (Fast Travel points)

Beacons are fast travel spots you will come across as you are out on missions and exploring the major areas of the game. These are usually used to get around the map fast or act as points where you and your party will respawn if you die in combat.
Beacons are also used to swap party members in and out. So when you interact with one, pick the “Gather Your Party” option and you will be able to access the party selection screen.
How to make the right party formation in Dragon Age The Veil Guard?
When making a balanced party, here are a few things that you should keep in mind:
- Have a balance between offense and defense. You should always have one tank frontline, one DPS (Melee or Ranged), and one support character on the team.
- Exploit Detonations as much as possible. After dealing status effects certain party members and even Rook can detonate them for massive damage.
- Always have the companion whom you want to romance on the active party list. Taking them out on missions will significantly boost their approval ratings.
Note: Some of your dialog choices and actions can force a companion to have low loyalty towards you and the cause. It’s a good idea to bring them along for some missions to get their approval ratings up even if you do not have long-term use for them.
