Path of Exile 2 complete Support Gem guide

Support Gems are items that are used to support your Skill Gems in Path of Exile 2. Both the items work a bit differently in the sequel than what they did in the first game, in the sense that PoE 2 uses Runes for Gear Sockets, with Skill Gems and Support Gems having their separate menu and systems.

This is why it can get a bit confusing for both new and returning players to have a full understanding of how this feature works. The guide below will therefore go over everything that you need to know about Support Gems in the RPG.

Path of Exile 2 Support Gem system explained

As mentioned, you use Support gems to support your Skill Gems in Path of Exile 2. Skill Gems will grant your character abilities that you can then bind to your skill bar. Support Gems, on the other hand, look to add an extra effect to your skills when they are cast.

Initially, you will be able to equip two Support Gems for every skill that your character has. However, as you progress through the narrative, Support Gem sockets will unlock allowing you to add even more skill to your abilities.

How to equip Support Gems in Path of Exile 2

To equip Support Gems in Path of Exile 2 you will need to open the Skill Gems menu through the character menu or by directly pressing G on the keyboard. Here you will be able to notice all the Skill Gems that are currently available to you.

Each Skill Gem will have two Support Gem sockets. So when you get a Support Gem its effects and which skill it will be able to benefit the most. Then drag it to the Empty Gem slot which is next to the skill that you want to enhance. However, this method is for those who are playing PoE 2 on a PC.

Support Gems Path of Exile 2

If you are on the console version, you will need to open your inventory and hover over the Support Gem’s icon. Tap X or Square, which will open up a different menu. This menu will allow you to slot the Support Gem into an open socket

Once the Support Gem is slotted, it will automatically enhance the skill the you put it up against. You don’t need to take any additional steps to make it proc when in combat.

Try mixing and matching the different Support Gems for your character’s class and Ascension to see which fits your play style and build the best.

Note: You will not be able to use two copies of the same Support Gem in your sockets. However, if you are playing as a Mercenary with a Gemling Legionnaire passive Gem Studded. You can bypass this rule.

Perpetual ChargeSupports skills that consume Power, Frenzy or Endurance. Charges on use, giving them a chance not to remove each Charge while it is still gaining the benefits of consuming them.
ScattershotSupports Projectile skills, making them fire extra Projectiles. Also lowers the Attack and Cast speed of supported skills, as well as lessening their damage.
Second WindSupports skills with cooldowns, giving them extra uses of the cooldowns. Cannot support instant or triggered skills.
Wind WaveSupports any skill that you can use, triggering a blast of wind that Knocks Back enemies if you are Stunned while using it.
Window of OpportunitySupports Channelling skills that have special effects if released with perfect timing, causing them to deal much more damage if released with perfect time but reducing the perfect timing window.

Tier II

IngenuitySupports skills with cooldowns, increasing the rate at which those cooldowns recover.
FerocitySupports skills that you use yourself. Supported skills will consume a Frenzt Charge on use if possible, and will gain significant Skill Speed if they do. Supported skills cannot generate Frenzy Charges.
ElectrocuteSupports any skill which can deal damage. Lightning damage from supported skills can inflict Electrocute, but supported skills deal less damage.
LongshotSupports Attacks, causing them to deal more damage from further away.
MomentumSupports any damaging skill that you use yourself, causing it to deal more damage if you move a sufficient distance while using the skill. Teleportation does not count towards the distance travelled.
MaimSupports Attacks, causing them to Maim enemies.
Practiced ComboSupports Strike Skills. Supported skills have a chance to build additional Combo on hit. Cannot support skills used by Minions.
RicochetSupports any skill which creates Projectiles, giving those Projectiles a chance to Chain when impacting terrain

Tier III

Decaying HexSupports Curse skills. Cursed enemies’ bodies decay, taking Chaos damage over time.
ClaritySupports Persistent Buff Skills, causing you to gain increased Mana Regeneration while the Skill is active.
Controlled DestructionSupports Spells which hit enemies, boosting their damage but preventing them from dealing Critical Hits.
Cold InfusionSupports Attacks, causing them to gain Cold Damage but deal less Fire and Lightning Damage.

Last GaspSupports skills that create Persistent Minions, causing those Minions to fight for a short duration before dying when they are fatally wounded.
Spell CascadeSupports Spells that affect an area around you or a target location, causing those Spells to also target additional areas on either side of the target area, along a randomly chosen axis. Cannot support Channeling skills or Remote skills.
Minion PactSupports damaging skills you use yourself, draining the life from one of your Minions on use in order to boost the skill’s damage. Only takes effect if you have a Minion with enough life to drain the full amount.

Mana FlareSupports any Spell that Hits enemies, causing it to trigger a Mana Flare on Critical hit. The mana Flare consumes your Mana to deal Fire damage. Cannot support the skills of Minions.

PotentialSupports Skills that you use yourself. Supported Skills will consume a Power Charge on use if possible, and will be much more likely to Critically hit if they do. Supported skills cannot generate Power Charges.
Soul ThiefSupports Attacks, causing their Physical damage to leech Mana.
Shock SiphonSupports any skill that hits enemies, causing you to recover Energy Shield when it kills a Shocked enemy
Strip AwaySupports skills which apply Exposure to enemies, increasing the effect of applied Exposure
WildfireSupports any skill that hits enemies. Spreading Ignites it inflicts to nearby enemies after a delay

Biting FrostSupports any skill that hits enemies, causing them to deal more damage to Frozen enemies but consume their Freese, Cannot support skills that Consume Freeze.
Burning InscriptionSupports any skill which creates Runic Inscriptions when cast, causing those Runic Inscriptions to create Ignited Ground, that deals damage based off of your maximum Mana.
Astral ProjectionSupports Nova skills, causing those Skills to take place at the targeted location when used instead of around you.
AblationSupports Offering skills. Supported skills Sacrifice a portion of your life on use, but deal much more damage and have more powerful Buffs in return.
Cold ExposureSupports any skill that hits enemies, causing it to deal less damage but inflict Cold Exposure when it Critically Hits an enemy.
Chaos InfusionSupports attacks, causing them to gain Chaos Damage but deals less damage of other types.
CapacitorSupports Invocation skills which trigger other skills. Supported skills have significantly higher maximum Energy.
Chaos MasterySupports Chaos skills, granting them an additional level.
Danse MacabreSupports Offering skills. Supported skills have increased Buff effect and deal more damage, but will target an additional skeleta; Minion when cast. If there is not an additional Skeletal Minion to target, no damage or Buff effect will be granted.
Chaotic FreezeSupports Spells that deals non-Ailment Chaos damage over time. Enemies taking damage over time from Debuffs caused by supported skills will suffer Freeze build-up from Chaos damage hits from any source.
Cold MasterySupports Cold skills, granting them an additional level.
Cursed GroundSupports Curse skills. Supported Curse skills no longer have an activation delay, instead creating areas which curse enemies so long as they are within them.
Drain AilmentsSupports Spells that deal non-Ailment damage over time, causing them to consume Ailments on enemies it applies damage over time. Debuffs in order to deal substantially more damage over time.
Energy RetentionSupports Meta skills. Supported skills gain a chance to partially Refund a portion of Energy cost when Triggering or Invoking other skills.
Elemental FocusSupports any skill that hits enemies, causing it to deal more Elemental Damage but be unable to inflict Elemental Ailments.
Elemental DischargeSupports any Spell that hits enemies, causing it to consume Elemental Ailments on hit to trigger an Elemental Discharge. Cannot support the skills of Minions.
Fire MasterySupports Fire skills, granting them an additional level.
FrostfireSupports any skill that hits enemies, causing it to Consume Freeze on Igniting a Frozen enemy to boost the effect of the Ignite.
ExecrateSupports any damaging skill that you use yourself, granting it a significantly higher chance to inflict Ailments on hit, but causing it to gain a long cooldown. Cannot support skills which already have a cooldown.
ExtractionSupports Spell skills. Using supported Spells will cause you to Sacrifice a portion of your life on use, gaining extra Chaos damage in exchange. Does not support Persistent Skills, Minion Skills, or Triggered Skills.
Hex BloomSupports Curses, spreading their effects when a cursed enemy dies.
Lightning MaterySupports Lightning skills, granting them an additional level.
Minion MasterySupports Minion skills, granting them an additional level.
Physical MasterySupports Physical skills, granting them an additional level.
WildshardsSupports Spell skills that fire Projectiles. Supported skills have a chance to fire many additional Projectiles in a circle.
SupercriticalSupports any skill that hits enemies, causing it to deal more damage with Critical Hits but have less Critical Hit chance.
StormfireSupports any skill that hits enemies, prolonging Shocks they inflict on Ignited enemies.
